Goal 8: Decrease GHG Emissions through Reducing Solid Waste Generation

 Goal 8

In California, landfills are the third largest source of methane, a short-lived climate pollutant (SLCP) that only lasts in the atmosphere for 12 years but is 83 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CalRecycle). Methane from landfills comes from organic waste like food scraps, yard trimmings, paper, and cardboard. Moving waste away from landfills by not creating it in the first place, reusing items, recycling, and composting is an effective ways to quickly reduce GHG emissions.

Get Involved!

  • Double check your local recycling guidelines. What’s accepted and not accepted in your recycling bin can vary from city to city. For Agoura Hills residents, take a quick look Waste Management’s Recycling Guide and make sure you’re sorting your items correctly.
  • Also double check your local organics disposal guidelines! SB 1383 requires waste haulers to provide organic waste collections to homes and businesses. Waste Management has a quick Residential Guide and a Business Guide to show how to properly sort your organic waste.
  • Start composting at home. Check out CalRecycle’ s Home Composting page for startup tips, troubleshooting, and additional resources. Agoura Hills residents can also pick up free compost from the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility without needing an appointment.
  • Dive into California’s Senate Bill 1383. Learn how our state’s Short Lived Climate Pollution Reduction Strategy (SB 1383) is tackling methane emissions on multiple fronts.
